Fruits Basket vol. 10 by Natsuki Takaya
Summary/Review
Warning: My manga "reviews" often contain spoilers. I find it hard to adequately discuss a volume of manga without talking about it in more detail than some might like.
This volumes flounders a bit. It begins with Tohru and the Sohma kids having fun at the beach during summer vacation. Then it shifts over to several scenes between Shigure, Hatori, and their ex-girlfriends. Apparently, both Shigure and Hatori want to re-connect. I was confused by this plot point. From the drawings, I couldn't make it what Shigure was doing versus what Hatori was doing, and what role the girls played. The last third of the book deals with Akito. He arrives at the vacation home to visit the Sohma family. He meets with all of them except Kyo and Torhu. Akito is an interesting character. He fluctuates between a whiny teenager-type character to a manipulative, malevolent dictator. I'm interested to see where his character goes. I don't like how he toys with Yuki. I wonder whether he's purposely trying to break his spirit or just torment the poor boy. Yuki really is desperately in love with Tohru. He is beginning to express his feelings more clearly, or at least letting Tohru know how much he appreciates her kindness. I'm looking forward to volume 11. Volume 10 feels like a place-holder, and I got a little lost. I'm hoping things get back on track with volume 11.
I read a couple of Fruits Basket a few years ago--they were so cute!

ReplyDeleteAkito is supposed to be taking on the burden of the family of some sort. I think his torment of Yuki is an outlet and/or jealousy. I actually found the fruits basket series to be rather tedious to finish especially since Tohru is such a Mary Sue.
